I spoke with Van Groeningen and Vandermeersch shortly before The Eight Mountains opened theatrically in the United States. Our conversation covered where they divided duties on the set of the film, how they translated Coginetti’s novel into cinematic terms, their approach to music, and what the film means for them both personally and professionally. Pietro’s father’s death reunites the two in realizing his dream of constructing a cabin on the Alps, and the project and subsequent explorations of the awe-inspiring mountain range bond Pietro and Bruno in a shared purpose. Yet despite their connection, the purity of nature and the demands of society both threaten to drive the men to pursue different, possibly irrevocably divergent paths on the vertiginous terrain of life. The mountains in "The Eight Mountains" are the Italian Alps and the Himalayas, equally beautiful, equally intimidating, and dazzling. They are seen with the eyes of two men who know them very well, feel comfortable climbing up and down the steep slopes, and have absorbed mountain life's challenges and joys. This may be frustrating for some viewers, but the film works because of its slowness and patience, not despite it.
The story begins in the summer of 1984, when 11-year-old Pietro and his parents, who live in Turin, spend the summer in a small Alpine village. It’s here that Pietro meets Bruno, a boy roughly the same age, who swiftly becomes his friend and guide. The region, with its scenic lakes and jaw-dropping vistas, is a boundless sun-drenched playground. And the writer-directors Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch joyously capture the boys’ rambunctious, rough-and-tumble innocence, the pure happiness we see coursing through their faces and bodies as they run, wrestle, yell and explore.
Making THE EIGHT MOUNTAINS

That’s how I came to watch Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers,” for me the best movie of 2023, first in an empty screening room with only a tight-lipped Searchlight-hired security guard present. It’s a film so breathtaking in its impact, it actually hurt not to be able to talk about it for another few months. On a completely different note, I saw Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” at a morning press screening at Cannes and couldn’t get its images out of my mind or its sounds out of my ears.
Felix, do you see that approach to music as similar to your other films? I always think about your use of “Sunrise, Sunset” from Fiddler on the Roof in Beautiful Boy, which at first had me skeptical but eventually won me over with its sincerity. Since you mentioned the music, how did you settle on your approach to using it in the film? There’s a real earnestness to the way it accompanies the action you depict, especially in montage, where so many filmmakers can use it as ironic or removed commentary on the action. Meanwhile, the soul of “The Eight Mountains,” Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch’s glorious male weepie, is in Alessandro Borghi and Luca Marinelli’s performances as boyhood peak pals, brought together by cliffs and ultimately separated by chasms. It is not being too facetious to call this the straight Brokeback Mountain. In building this rudimentary stone hut, they have attempted to rebuild their childhood, rebuild their love for each other. But Pietro is to make a terribly painful discovery that, in his long and bitter absence, his wounded father actually became a friend to the grownup Bruno, hiking with him in the valley and becoming a quasi-father to him. And, to add to the mortification of having his dad stolen from him by Bruno, Pietro finds that the young woman he is sort of interested in, is more interested in the unassuming Bruno.
