No, unlike some conventional theme-park rollercoasters there are no scary loops or upside-down sections. Riders have control of a throttle which enables them to increase/decrease speed up to this limit. If you sign up to ride and decide not to — for whatever reason — you simply need to cancel two hours before the appointment time in order to get your money back. There is a station at the base of the ride to check that you meet the requirements (don’t worry, if you’re a little heavy it just shows a red/green light, not your weight). However, there are height and weight requirements that must be met. For that reason, younger kids (those younger than 8 years old) aren’t likely to be able to ride.

During one cruise we had two days at sea at the end of the trip where we planned to ride. It would seem to make sense that if you are at sea, it’s a great activity to do since it can help fill the day. While Carnival is known for having a lot included with the cruise fare, the Bolt roller coaster is an extra cost. At the time of this writing, the price is $15 per person, per ride.

It’s more than 70% shorter than the other two coasters, with a single lap taking around 30 seconds. If it were a bit more affordable, we would likely do it again and again every time we sailed on the Mardi Gras. But odds are the second you’re off, you’ll grab your phone to try and snag another reservation. At the top of the stairs, there’s an extremely large covered queue area. The reservation system really alleviates the need to use the entire area, but it’s possible that they’re currently taking fewer reservations for social distancing purposes.

For regular cruise ship passengers, it presents an opportunity to try something new and exciting. With no inversions, a simple lap belt, and a relatively low speed, it is excellent for the more casual rider. If you're interested in spending time outdoors working on your tan by the pool, you can do so at one of five onboard pools. I'm not a huge drinker, so I didn't personally try cocktails from the Center Stage Bar (Deck 6) or Grand View Bar (Deck 7) in Grand Central. The former features a bit of a retro vibe, and the latter is backed by a giant light-up wall that looks like wave. In addition to a fun selection of cocktails — some of which involve candy — the bar's theme is tied to an animated octopus named Dr. Inks. She has a Ph.D., pet butterflies and extensive collections of both books and fashionable eyewear. Every so often, she'll appear on the screens above the area to chat.

Carnival turned to roller coaster manufacturer Maurer Rides to help them develop this first coaster at sea. After two days on board, my son and I have tested out all the waterslides and the ropes course on Carnival Celebration, as well as the roller coaster. The ropes course has the advantage in that once you're strapped in, you can go around countless times without waiting in line. However, my 8-year-old bailed three obstacles in, and I had to talk a crying, frightened child back across those obstacles to the main platform. I tried again later, and the latter half of it is a bit challenging and definitely pushes your trust in a harness over your base fear of falling to the limits. In addition to chicken strips, sandwiches and fries, the counter-service venue also serves breakfast.
That might have been a mistake because that initial burst of speed turned my stomach a bit, and I wasn't sure how the ride would go. But once I adjusted to the speed, it was just fast enough to be fun but not sickening and I kept the car at full throttle even through the twisty-turny parts. I kept jamming the boost button, but it wasn't clear when or how often it would give me extra bursts of speed. Empty your pockets before you go or store your belongings in the provided cubbies so you don't lose your cruise card or wallet as you ride.
