During her life she was rumored to have an illegitimate child, possibly with her father's chief equerry, Major-General Thomas Garth. In episode one, viewers see Queen Charlotte upset with her children for not having legitimate marriages, and thus not providing any legitimate heirs to the throne. She admonishes all of them for being "virgins to the left of me, whores to the right," and not giving her "legitimate grandbabies." The Princess of Wales shared that George and Charlotte enjoyed helping out in the kitchen. King George III

She entered a secret romance with Sir Brent Spencer, an officer in the British Army and equerry to the King. Like her sisters, Princess Elizabeth had a very sheltered life, but she was known for her sense of humor, her interest in agriculture (shared with her father), and her artistic talents. She and her sisters were often denied opportunities to marry, leading them to embark on romances with men at court, which Elizabeth did as well. Eventually, she met a German prince, Frederick of Hesse-Homburg, and successfully overcame family and court opposition to marry him in a friendly, though not especially romantic, match. From an early age, Princess Augusta Sophia gained a reputation for being very beautiful but also very shy.

After the death of Princess Charlotte, the Duke of York became his brother's heir. However, he predeceased his older brother, dying at age 63 on January 5, 1827. Queen Charlotte, born Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz on May 19, 1744, was the daughter of Duke Charles Louis Frederick of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Princess Elizabeth Albertina of Saxe-Hildburghausen. She grew up at Untere Schloss (Lower Castle) in Mirow, in northern Germany, and married King George III when she was just 17 years old.

Did Queen Charlotte and King George III really have a loving marriage?

But some of his children did, including Prince Edward, who moved there when he was 18 and enlisted as a cadet in the Hanoverian Foot Guards, per the Royal Collection Trust. The following year, he returned home to England and joined the British Army. Unfortunately, due to an incident of being absent without leave and his use of harsh discipline, Edward was sent to Canada by his father the king as punishment in 1791. Before the creation of effective contraceptives, families could be really, really huge.

So expect to see a bit of everything on here, with a focus on little known stories. The Duke of Sussex title wouldn't be used again until 2018, when Queen Elizabeth granted it to her grandson, Prince Harry. Meghan Markle, his wife, became the first-ever Duchess of Sussex.

Was Queen Charlotte really Black?

Professional photographer Matt Porteous took George’s fifth birthday image which was released on July 21 at 10.30 p.m. William and Kate have marked each of their children’s birthdays with a new picture often taken by Kate. The fourth child of Viscount Edmund and Viscountess Violet Bridgerton, and the family’s eldest daughter. Following an eventful first season as a debutante, Daphne is now married to the sought-after Duke Simon with whom she has a son, August. The beloved late father of the Bridgerton brood (at least in the Regency era).

The groom was her cousin, Prince William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh. He turned out to be a jerk though, often abandoning her for long periods. After he died Mary seemed to come into her own, and she enjoyed her life until 1857, when she became the last of her 14 brothers and sisters to die. This meant Mary also had a weird role as the family gossip, letting the other members know what was going on with their father, and with each other. Some died young, some became kings, and all had very interesting lives. According to Kensington Palace, Kate started a course of preventative chemotherapy in late February.

George and Charlotte’s remarkable fecundity was assisted by Charlotte’s youthful age on marriage (17), which extended her married fertile years, increasing the likelihood of pregnancy. She also did not gain from the contraceptive benefits of sole breastfeeding, which could have contributed to a reduction in the number of pregnancies, as she always handed her babies to wet nurses negating that outcome. And of course the couple was devoted to each other and the marriage was largely a happy one. Princess Sophia, the twelfth child of George and Charlotte, was born on November 3, 1777.

Princess Augusta Sophia

The couple had fifteen children during their six-decade marriage, thirteen of whom lived to adulthood (both Prince Octavius and Prince Alfred died in childhood). Of their children, two went on to rule England—George, The Prince of Wales (later King George IV) and Prince William (later King William IV). Prince George Augustus Frederick was the first of fifteen children born to Queen Charlotte and King George. You might remember his birth scene on Queen Charlotte — Prince George arrived not long after his parents nuptials. Prince George married Maria Anne Fitzherbert in 1785, but the Crown did not recognize their marriage.

He’s the Duke of Hastings and has grown to love family following lifelong estrangement from his own father. Violet was born a Ledger and went on to marry Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. She’s the mother of eight wildly distinct and charming children. The oldest son of Lord and Lady Danbury’s children, and the heir of the family. The leading lady of Queen Charlotte and England’s ultimate discerning matriarch.

In 1760, the young and unmarried George III inherited the British throne. As Charlotte was a minor German princess with no interest in politics, George considered her a suitable consort, and they married in 1761. The marriage lasted 57 years and produced 15 children, 13 of whom survived to adulthood. They included two future British monarchs, George IV and William IV; as well as Charlotte, Princess Royal, who became Queen of Württemberg; and Prince Ernest Augustus, who became King of Hanover.

George, meanwhile, strived to return morality to the royal family. According to the PBS series American Experience, he was the first king of the Hanover dynasty that didn’t have an extramarital affair, and the English people admired his fidelity. He built model farms at Windsor Castle and collected model ships and coins.

George’s 60-year reign remains the longest of any male English monarch, but the king suffered through much of it with an illness that has confounded researchers for centuries. Even with George’s eventful reign—the American Revolutionary War, the French Revolutionary wars in the 1790s, and the incorporation of Ireland in 1801 all happened on his watch—the first 25 years of their marriage were generally happy. Born Princess Sophia Charlotte in 1744 in Mecklenberg-Strelitz, which is now part of Germany, she had good royal credentials and was a Protestant.
